Diwali Art

This term we are learning about different festivals. Right now we are learning about Diwali. This is a Indian tradition to welcome dead lords and goddesses into their homes. The festival lasts for 5 days from October to November. Currently we are making Rangolis which is a beautiful patern that is created by laying delicate powder on the floor. On the nights you set off fireworks into the sky and light candles in the home.

This whole festival is to show awareness of the good light.

Athletics coming up!!:)

At the end of term three we started getting prepared for athletics day which is on the 24th of October. We have been training hard. So far this term we have been rotating at different events such as discus, sprints, long distance, etc. for practice.
We are all looking forward to this day, it's better than work lol.

We have been getting our sport coaches to teach us some techniques for athletics, today we did high jump and long jump with them which was really fun. :) For long jump we got told to use not only our legs but to use our arms to help us jump further. We all improved with their help.
For high jump we use what everyone calls the scissor kick, which is throwing your legs over the bar in a scissor formation, this way is the best/easiest.

Athletics is great.

Science with Dr Libby

We did some science with Dr Libby on Friday at 9:30 in the morning, but at Dr Libby's house in Cambridge, UK it was 10:30 at night. We face-timed her with Miss Caygill's i-phone on to the board  and we all asked her questions like can flies get obesity?!! Or if a fly can have 3 wings and the answer was no but there is a 4-winged fly.
Then Room 17 talked to Libby and we went to the library and we have learnt so much. Now we know what cells are, and that atoms are everywhere and the smallest thing in the world it is an atom split In half.

Science, Obesity. By Caitlin

This term in science, one of the things we have learnt about is Obesity. Here are some interesting facts about Obesity.

Rachel Taylor is a Diabetic and Obesity researcher at University of Otago, trying to prevent children from being overweight and getting different ways to helping to reduce weight in appropriate ways.

Obesity has serious implications for mental and physical health such as: high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease. Some people find it harder to lose weight than others.

Obesity is simply defined as having too much body fat for your particular weight or height. It is usually measured by an internationally recognised system known as body mass index also known as BMI. BMI is calculated by comparing your height to weight. It's quite simple in adults, but in children, the measurement is commonly adjusted depending on age and sex.

Rachel is one of the investigators of a several large projects aimed at determining different ways to effectively preventing children becoming overweight or helping them to reduce thier weight in appropriate way.

There are many different factors that contribute obesity, an average figure from research studies estamiate obesity is 40% genetic and 60% due to environmental factors but there is a lot of variation in the scienentific literature

For some people the most effective technique to prevent or reduce obesity might be to reduce food size portions.

Science

For the remaining 7 weeks of term 3 ,Rimu are focusing on science for topic.
Our unit is called uniquely me and we are learning about DNA and what makes us different from our class mates.
Some questions we asked were,
What does DNA stand for?
Why are we the way we are?
How does it all happen?
And why is DNA so important?

A Day Of Winter Tornament!

On Friday the 1st August Rimu Syndicate went to Rangiora to participate and represent Woodend  school in a tornament of sports.  Our school participated and represented Woodend in the Winter Tournament. We played in these games: Hockey, Soccor, Netball and Rugby. All of our teams played very well not to mention the rugby team winning the final with a score of 5-0 !!!!

It was a fun day but very tiring when we got on the bus to leave everybody looked like they were going to fall asleep!

Over term 3 we will continue to play on Friday each week. We can't wait till we play again!!!! Thank you so much to the Kaipoi High School students for coaching our teams!

Art

Over term 3 our class is focusing on watercolours. We have been looking at different ways to paint  and how to create different textures. We have learnt how to get different effects with the paint for example using a dry paintbrush on dry paper with a tiny bit of paint, and painting a square and dropping a different colour on to the paper.

Our talented teacher Miss Caygill has organised all of our art supplies and has been teaching room 16 our art. Thank you so much for all your help room 16 just loves learning art with you!!

Music festival and the last week of term.

During book week the Woodend School Choir, consisting of fifteen or more students went to the Kaiapoi Borough Music Festival containing five different schools. During the process we sang our hearts out and tried our hardest. It was a great achievement for most as to the fact there were only four people here from the start of term one, and the rest joined either later that term or at the start of term two.

Last week of term so exciting, half way through the year already. During the busy week the kapahaka students went to Willowbank as a reward, choir students got to go to the Rangiora orchestra also as a reward, last but not least, the hard work from the Road Patrollers has paid off because they're now having a fish and chip lunch.

Thanks for reading Rm 16's blog and have a great holiday!
